The late Michael P. Smith is an award winning freelance documentary photographer capturing the music, culture, and folklife of New Orleans, Louisiana. When looking at his images one can see the energy and emotions that Smith documented during these musical and highly animated times. Nandita Raman: Remembering Absent Meaning
Posted by Daylight Books on
It really is a fascinating thing when we observe how we use our memories. Based on our emotional status at a given moment in time, we can decide whether to hold back memories or give them out. Some memories are so precious that we can never let them go where as others we do our best to forget, expecting a new memory to come and replace the old one. Nandita Raman explores the concepts of memory and time when she visits her grandfather in Banaras and asks him to recollect his childhood home. When bringing up the question at different times, her grandfather would have a new and different approach in answering the subject. This sparked a curiousity in Raman to examine memory, objective reality and time.
"Memory and thought can only exist in time. A mirror, on the other hand is not subject to duration. It has nothing of the past, the reflection is in the now, nothing is retained. Here, in the no-place of the mirror, the present as the fleeting instant, the past invoked by this moment and the future memory of this reflection might simultaneously come together. What would be the relevance of memory if there were no past, no future; in timelessness?" -Nandita Raman
Nandita is a recipient of the Daylight CDS Photo Awards and her show Remembering Absent Meaning is opening on Thursday February 2nd at the ICP-Bard MFA Studios.

Cruel and Unusual: A Look Behind Prison Walls
Posted by Daylight Books on
On this earth that we live in today, over 9 million people are incarcerated within prison walls and call it home. With this figure projected to grow in the coming decades, have we really considered the effectiveness of our international prison systems? Additionally, what steps are being taken to productively rehabilitate inmates, rather than simply secluding them from society and releasing them once their term is up? The Nooderlicht Photogallery has curated a show from nine women photographers to explore the effect that mass imprisonment has had on our sense of justice and virtue.

2012 Dummy Awards
Posted by Daylight Books on
Photo books are a great way to tell your story but as many of us know, it is a long and difficult task to get them published and into the book stands. Submit your unpublished book to the 2012 Dummy Awards for a chance to have your book exhibited in Paris, and ultimately published by Seltmann and Soehne. The jurors consist of nine very influencial names within the field of photography and it will be exciting to see who's photobook makes the final decision. Entries close on March 31st.
