The AjA Project, World Refugee Day Celebration in San Diego
Posted by Daylight Books on
The AjA Project, a nonprofit based in San Diego, California, provides participatory photography workshops around the world for youth who are affected by war and displacement. Since its founding, AjA has provided long-term, community-based programming for over 1000 displaced youth, and has shared their visual narratives with over 1 million viewers through large-scale public exhibits. Students in this year's AjA workshops will present their multimedia photo essays at the first annual World Refugee Day Celebration in San Diego, California.
Sunday, June 19, 2011, 1–6 p.m.
Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, CA
The World Refugee Day Celebration will bring together members of various refugee communities, representatives from local refugee resettlement organizations and award-winning photographers, including Pulitzer Prize winner Don Bartletti and photographers Sam Hodgson and Roberto Guerra. The event will also feature the San Diego premiere of Where We Live, a documentary by award-winning Iraqi director Fady Hadid.
On View at Yancey Richardson Gallery
Posted by Daylight Books on
Opening this week on June 9th, Yancey Richardson Gallery will present the work of 2 young, emerging photographers, Bryan Graf and Melanie Willhide. Both shows focus on the altered still image.
Graf's show, "Field Recordings", presents a body of work entitled "Wildlife Analysis", in which he has sandwiched negatives of animals out in nature with color film exposed only to daylight. The result is sort of toxic and unsettling. Willhide's work, "Sleeping Beauties", a group of artificial, invented artifacts that appear, at first glance, to be the backsides of old family photos. The artist uses digital means to create authentic-looking aged pieces of the detritus of memory.
Both shows run from June 9-July 15, 2011
535 West 22nd St., 3rd floor
