Photographer Gabriela Maj will be discussing the work from her recently released monograph in upcoming events on the West Coast. A series of portraits from the women's prisons in Afghanistan, 'Almond Garden' features Maj's haunting, compassionate photographs of the inmates along with the inmates own stories. Made over the course of four years, Maj's project is the largest record documenting the experiences of incarcerated women in Afghanistan to date. Together, the voices in 'Almond Garden' testify to the human rights abuses many Afghan women continue to endure, and serve as a call for much-needed support from the international community in the battle for women's rights in Afghanistan.
