Leah Sobsey is a photographer and educator from Chapel Hill and Durham, NC with degrees in both anthropology and studio art. Using both digital technologies and 19th century techniques, Sobsey’s art merges her two interests to illuminate forgotten histories of natural and human worlds and transform the national park collections she studies into vital representations of our present moment. The artist notes, “My current focus on national parks is a way of preserving these fragile specimens that represent American history. This comes at a time when climate change and funding allocations threaten indigenous species and artifacts with extinction.” Her new book, Collections: Birds, Bones and Butterflies, published by Daylight Books, will be available for sale at the event.
