While stationed as a paratrooper in Northern Ireland in the late 1980s, Stuart Griffiths assembled an extraordinary archive of personal snapshots. These photographs were made before Griffiths received any formal training in photography and document his experience of soldiering towards the end of the 'Troubles'. Raw snapshots made for his own personal album, but powerfully evoking the boredom, frustration and fear felt by the group of very young men he served alongside. In this new multimedia piece Stuart discusses his time in Northern Ireland, why his book gives a unique insight into army life and how he first became interested in photography.

For four months in 2011, Aaron Vincent Elkaim lived among the residents of Fort McKay, in northeastern Alberta, Canada. Fort McKay sits on top of the Athabasca oil sands, and is also the home of citizens from the Cree and Dene First Nations. The reserve relies nearly exclusively on the extraction of oil. Through his photographic interactions with the population of Fort McKay, Elkaim explores the ways in which members of these indigenous communities negotiate the tensions between modernity, development and age old traditions.

Twenty years after the Nicaraguan civil way ended, Kevin Kunishi traveled throughout the highlands of Northern Nicarague. Kunishi revisits the location in an attempt to discover and document the legacy that this protracted war left behind. A selection of the resulting portraits of survivors, both Sandinistas and Contras, as well as exquisite landscapes are gathered together here in Kunishi's first monograph.

The photographs within Los Restos are notational records of the experience of the collective memory of those involved. Although philosophies, the survivors are now bound by a landscape filled with physical and psychological scars. The markers of affiliation are slowly fading, but the horros of war remain.

The exhibition will be on view from October 11-November 11, 2012

The opening and book signing will take place on October 11 from 6-8PM

Catalan photographer, curator, writer, and publisher, Fontcuberta has worked in both advertising and photojournalism, and been associated with a number of significant groups and publications, including the Madrid-based magazine Photovision (f. 1981). His prominence in contemporary art photography rests on his use of the camera to create impossible creatures, scenes, and sequences of events, this challenging its claim to represent 'the real'. Fontcuberta initiated the Barcelona Photo Festival, and in 1996 was appointed artisitic director of the Arles Festival.

During this master class, Fontcuberta will share his vision of photography and its many aspects, and analyze the work brought along by participants. This will be an opportunity for them to examine and enhance their own creative approaches and choices.
