The Daylight Project space is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by award-winning photographer Chris Churchill. In 2004, Churchill began a five-year journey to investigate the notion of faith through conversations with people across the country. These encounters evolved into a collection of stories and images that cumulatively address faith as a fundamental part of the human experience. American Faith is an exploration into the inherent human need to be connected to something greater than ourselves.

Did you take your first photograph when you were young?

Early Works will be an exhibition that examines the naive imagery made by contemporary photographers when they were children. There early images often reveal surprising talent, visual intuition, and honesty. Kept for many decades in shoeboxes and faded albums, the images are often cherished belongings that play a key role in defining the self as artists. This exhibition will b a close look at photographers' earliest works, paired with personal narratives about the images and their role in each photographers' development as an artist.

Curated by Laura Moya and Laura Valenti Jelen

Submission Deadline: Monday, February 4, 2013

Exhibition Venues: Newspace (Portland) and RayKo (San Francisco)

While stationed as a paratrooper in Northern Ireland in the late 1980s, Stuart Griffiths assembled an extraordinary archive of personal snapshots. These photographs were made before Griffiths received any formal training in photography and document his experience of soldiering towards the end of the 'Troubles'. Raw snapshots made for his own personal album, but powerfully evoking the boredom, frustration and fear felt by the group of very young men he served alongside. In this new multimedia piece Stuart discusses his time in Northern Ireland, why his book gives a unique insight into army life and how he first became interested in photography.

Twenty years after the Nicaraguan civil way ended, Kevin Kunishi traveled throughout the highlands of Northern Nicarague. Kunishi revisits the location in an attempt to discover and document the legacy that this protracted war left behind. A selection of the resulting portraits of survivors, both Sandinistas and Contras, as well as exquisite landscapes are gathered together here in Kunishi's first monograph.

The photographs within Los Restos are notational records of the experience of the collective memory of those involved. Although philosophies, the survivors are now bound by a landscape filled with physical and psychological scars. The markers of affiliation are slowly fading, but the horros of war remain.

The exhibition will be on view from October 11-November 11, 2012

The opening and book signing will take place on October 11 from 6-8PM
