Fraction Magazine relaunches with a new website and issue number 10. The magazine creates an alternative outlet for aspiring and established photographers to show there work outside of the gallery setting. Photography is a continually changing form, Fraction Magazine strives to vigorously examine the role that photography plays in society and how the medium is changing. Khaled Hasan: Winner of the CDP Emerging Documentist Award

Congratulations to Khaled Hasan as the winner of the first Center for Documentary Practices Emerging Documentist Award. Hasan's story, Living Stone, documents the lives of a community of stone laborers in Jaflong, in North Eastern Bangladesh. Living Stone was selected by judges Paul Fusco, Ed Kashi and David Lloyd who commended Hasan for his "beautiful and hauntingly powerful photography about a compelling story" and the way he "used the language of photography to make us feel and understand the lives and land of the people".

The WWP Project

With the aspiration of using photography to promote international gay rights, the 14-month “Walk with Pride” project aims to document over 30 parades around the globe. Developed by photographer Charles Meacham and blogger Sarah Baxter, “Walk with Pride” takes advantage of social media technologies to link viewers, and to encourage greater awareness and involvement on the issues surrounding gay rights.

6th Annual powerHouse Portfolio Review

Since 2005 powerHouse Books has organized a highly sought-after Portfolio Review and a series of Publishing Workshops. On February 28, 2010 powerHouse Books will offer their Sixth Annual powerHouse Portfolio Review event, a platform for all levels of aspiring and professional photographers to present their body of work to be reviewed and critiqued by leading experts in the fields of photography, art, media, and advertising and to receive guidance and mentoring for future artistic and commercial career development. The portfolio review accepts about 100 photographers, who will meet with a panel of experts that includes a range of publishers, photo editors, commercial photography agents, gallery directors, photography critics, art book packagers, and designers. Each attendee will be assigned five one-on-one reviews with members of our panel of renowned photography professionals.

The Black Snapper

The Black Snapper is a magazine website that showcases one
photographer every single day in a dedicated slideshow. The magazine is
curated by internationally renowned guest curators, such as Abbas of
Magnum Photos, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Art, Bamako
Encounters, FotoRio, the Photo Museum Antwerp, the Aperture Foundation
and The Guardian Weekend Magazine, to name a few. Each guest
curator programs one week by inviting seven photographers.
In
addition to presenting established photographers, Black Snapper aims to
emancipate young and talented photographers from Asia, Africa and South
America. Black Snapper hopes to inspire viewers with compelling work they haven't
seen yet and to cross cultural and political borders in the process.
On
top of all that, Black Snapper wants to be at the cutting edge of viewer
interaction. They are currently creating a dialogue system that will use
visitors' ratings to recommend comparable artist slideshows and hand
them a list of their personal favorities. They are building up a huge
archive and are working hard at giving users as many convenient ways
possible to browse all that beautiful photography and to revisit the
slideshows they like best.
